Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Dear Westwood ISD Schools, Staff and Families:

Westwood ISD values the health and well-being of our students, staff and families and works throughout the year to promote healthy schools. We are blessed to have a Registered Nurse and two Licensed Vocational Nurses that act as caregivers, medical resources, and promoters of healthy schools.

It is natural to wonder about the possible impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). WISD monitors information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as information from the Northeast Texas Department of Health and follows their recommendations.

At this time, there are NO COVID-19 cases in our area.

Here are some important facts about the coronavirus:

  • The coronavirus is a respiratory virus, like the flu or the common cold.
  • Experts believe the virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes and someone in close contact inhales those respiratory droplets.
  • It is possible for a person to get coronavirus by touching a surface contaminated with the virus, but this is not believed to be the primary method of transmission.
  • Symptoms of coronavirus include fever, cough and shortness of breath.
  • Symptoms can occur 2-14 days after exposure.

Everyone benefits by following these general cold and flu season guidelines:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water (use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available)
  • Help your students to wash their hands well
  • Do not drop off your sick child at school
  • Stay home when you're sick
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing
  • Avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms

Whenever a campus has a high rate of flu or cases of other contagious illnesses, our custodial staff members conduct a thorough cleaning and disinfection of all surfaces at the school. In addition, the district has specialized equipment that provides extensive disinfection throughout a building. As a precaution, our custodial staff has been implementing these measures.

As we continue to learn more about the coronavirus, including any possible threat to our community, we will keep you informed.

Thank you for your continued support,

Westwood ISD Administration
